Construction Update

Interstate 84 (I-84)
Expect I-84 to be reduced to one lane in each direction at night excluding weekends, between the Franklin Interchange and Robinson Road overpass while crews work along the shoulders.

The lane closures will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Both lanes will be open by the morning commute and during the day. Overnight closures are not expected to occur on Friday or Saturday nights. Weekly closures will continue until the shoulder work is completed.

Garrity Boulevard
Two southbound lanes and one northbound lane have been moved inside the bridge piers beneath the Garrity Interchange bridges while crews use the outside lanes to work on the bridges.

The speed limit has been lowered to 35 on Garrity Boulevard and 55 mph on I-84 through the construction zones.

Background

In 2001, the Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS) and ITD completed a cooperative planning effort called the I-84 Corridor Study. The study examined the transportation system needs for the I-84 corridor from the WYE Interchange to Idaho 44 west of Caldwell.

The study recommended specific improvements that warranted further evaluation and implementation. The recommendation to widen the interstate segment between Franklin Boulevard and Garrity Boulevard was included in the COMPASS study.

Funding

This project is funded by the GARVEE Transportation Program. The program uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite interstate improvements.

Schedule

Environmental clearance for this project was obtained in April 2009 through a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) on the I-84, Karcher Interchange to Five Mile Environmental Study. Preliminary design was completed in April 2009, and final design was completed in September 2009. Right-of-way acquisition was completed in September 2009. Construction began in January 2010, with anticipated completion in June 2011.
